FPA Procedures Manual
Background
The IFPUG Counting Practices Manual (CPM) 4.2 provides definitions, rules and steps for function point counting which aim to standardize the count results. Each organization that implements function point analysis also needs additional documented procedures for standardizing the counting process. In order for counters to count in a predictable and repeatable way they need to be provided with a clear set of standards for:
- documenting counts
- criteria for selecting counts
- allocation of roles and responsibilities
- recording, storing, reviewing and reporting count results.
This manual is presented in two formats:
- Generic tool independent guidelines for storing, documenting and reporting counts are generic and independent of any tools.
- Customised for use with the SCOPE Project Sizing Software™ .
The purpose of the manual/s would be to provide a concise set of easy to read guidelines that would assist in:
- ensuring a standard approach is adopted to function point counting at an organisation which is in line with the IFPUG 4.2 guidelines
- facilitating the documentation of any additional standards identified within an organisation to address their metrics reporting requirements or the specific environment,
- ensuring the accuracy and consistency of function point count results,
- ensuring that the SCOPE software is used in a standardised way so the results of counts can be used for estimating and comparison of project productivity.
Audience
The intended audience for the manual/s would be:
- Metrics team members and coordinators responsible for administration and implementation of software measurement.
- All persons who participate in, or are responsible for the collection, storage, analysis and reporting of Function Points.
