The Common Software Measurement International Consortium (COSMIC) is pleased to announce that the major upgrade of the COSMIC Functional Size Measurement Method, version 3.0, is now available. The three documents listed below may now be downloaded, free-of-charge from www.gelog.etsmtl.ca/cosmic-ffp

'Documentation Overview and Glossary of Terms', which gives an overview of all COSMIC method documentation and lists and defines all terms that are common to all COSMIC documents.

'Method Overview', which gives an introduction to the method for beginners and those interested in converting from '1st Generation' FSM methods.

'Measurement Manual', which is the main reference document for practical use of the method.

A fourth document 'Advanced and Related Topics' dealing with subjects for experienced practitioners and on topics like conversion of sizes from other methods will be published before the end of 2007.

In this issue of the IT Metrics & Productivity Journal, the first article by Charles Symons, Joint Leader of the Common Software Measurement International Consortium, examines the economic benefits that could be obtained by relevant parts of the UK software industry using a metrics program to help achieve reasonable target improvements in productivity and in estimating accuracy for software development and maintenance.

The second article by Pam Morris, CEO of Total Metrics, Austrailia, introduces another more recent functional method known as COSMIC-FFP, which enables all the functionality that is delivered and worked on by the supplier to be included in the sizing of these contracts.

The third article by Charles Symons compares the IFPUG function point method to the most primitive counting method known to man, stating that software re-measured using the COSMIC-FFP method more properly reflects the increasing size and complexity of software functions.

Chris Lokan (Ph.D) has written a very detailed and accurate analysis of the history and background of functional size measurement. Includes the history of the evolution of Function Points from Albrecht through to COSMIC
This paper can be located in the following publication: C.J. Lokan. Function Points. Advances in Computers, M. Zelkowitz (ed), Volume 65, Chapter 7. Academic Press, 2005. ISBN 0-12-012165-4.

This document provides a additional domain-specific assistance beyond that given in the Measurement Manual, within the established principles and rules. It discusses for example, the mapping of domain-specific requirements definition methods to the COSMIC-FFP concepts, and gives many detailed examples to assist practical measurement.

Tony Rollo – ACOSM 2000

Tony Rollo (SMS) The paper compares the effectiveness and methodology of using COSMIC-FFP functional sizing method to IFPUG FPA when counting WWW applications. It concludes that COSMIC-FFP method compares favourably with the IFPUG method as many of the issues experienced with FPA and WWWW applications are resolved using the COSMIC method.
